Kendrick’s Untitled Album: March 23rd

We got a release date.

Kendrick’s been doing some things, from releasing tracks to giving interviews, but the whole time folks were left wondering when his follow up to good kid, m.A.A.d. city was gonna drop. Well, now we know. Not only do we have a release date (March 23rd, 2015), but we got artwork and a title (well, kind of.)

March 23rd, 2015

Kendrick Lamar will be releasing his 3rd album as Kendrick Lamar (and 2nd on a major label) on March 23rd, 2015. good kid, m.A.A.d. city dropped on October 22, 2012. That means by the time his next album comes out, it will have been just about 2 and a half years. That’s a hell of a lot of time, and a lot has happened in this time:

  • good kid, m.A.A.d. city famously lost the Grammy to Macklemore, who texted Kendrick to apologize (then posted the apology on Instagram like a herb.)

  • Kanye came back with Yeezus (and now some other shit) to reclaim the throne that everyone said Kendrick had earned.

  • Kendrick has released a few tracks, some which will be on the album and some which won’t but are no less important (like Control.)

  • Ferguson, Staten Island and a few other places had what we’ll just call extremely racially charged moments.

[Untitled]

The album does not currently have a title, and considering Kendrick’s performance on the Colbert Report featured an untitled track, I expect it will stay like that. A few decades ago, Led Zeppelin was sick of the critics saying all they cared about was their name and their band, so they released an untitled album (which we now know as Led Zeppelin IV, you know, the one with Stairway to Heaven) that didn’t even have their name on the cover. This might be a similar move by Kendrick, who knows that anything he releases after good kid, m.A.A.d. city couldn’t possibly please everyone, so he might as well let the album stand alone.

This is all confirmed by the album artwork, which is basically just a blackout. Considering Kendrick released a track called The Blacker The Berry, we can assume this album will heavily rely on Kendrick’s experience as a black man in this country from a few different angles. Like Led Zeppelin IV, the artwork has neither Kendrick’s name nor an album name on it, but Kendrick took it a step further by having no arwork at all. Kanye wishes he could have been this bold for the Yeezus artwork.

New Kendrick Lamar Album Cover

UPDATE: Looks like this might actually be the album cover, if Instagram ain’t lying to us. The album might also have a title, so [untitled] might just be for now. Regardless, I stand by most of my points considering the new album cover still doesn’t have Kendrick’s name or anything on it. I guess we won’t know for sure until March 23rd comes.
