Then you’ve come to the right place!
(Above: Nas reminiscing when it wasn’t all business)
Nah, Hip Hop ain’t dead.
Here at Spit Talking, we believe Hip Hop is alive and well. Even the man who claimed Hip Hop was dead 8 years ago is now saying Life is Good (and if you haven’t heard Nas’s 2012 album yet, you better go put it on and then continue reading this). And Hip Hop is doing damn good right now. 2013 was a great year if you love hip hop.
2013 was definitive proof that hip hop’s alive and well.
2013 saw some of the greatest rappers of all time (Big Boi, Ghostface Killah, Talib Kweli) release some hot albums (Big Boi: Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors, Ghostface: 12 Reasons to Die, Talib: Prisoner of Conscious AND Gravitas) to show the old guard’s still got it. [Further proof: Yeezus.] Some younger cats got their music to a wider audience too, with Chance the Rapper’s Acid Rap blowing up, Tyler the Creator showing off his jazzy, smoother side in Wolf, and of course, the great Big K.R.I.T. and his incredibly varied (along with self-produced) King Remembered in Time. Finally, some rappers who are only new to mainstream audiences finally got their due (Pusha T – My Name is My Name, Danny Brown – Old).
Not to mention those holding it down in 2014.
Now don’t get it twisted, 2014 has been holding its own too. Some rappers have shot to the top, like Isaiah Rashad and his Cilvia Demo, and of course Big K.R.I.T. with Cadillactica. Freddie Gibbs and Madlib, who aren’t exactly new, unleashed a masterpiece on the world with Piñata. And speaking of rappers finally getting their due, Stalley (who I saw KILL IT opening for Kendrick 2 years ago) dropped OHIO to show this is the year people gotta wake up on Stalley.
2014 has mainly shown how accessible making rap (and videos) has become, as many up and coming artists have no problem connecting with their base through twitter and soundcloud. 2015 is sure to be a great year for hip hop, and some of the best hip hop albums will probably come from someone whose name you don’t know yet. If you love hip hop, it’s a great time to be alive.
