Last post, I talked about dream albums I hope to see soon. This post is more realistic: actual upcoming rap albums to get pumped for.
The last few years of rap have seen somewhat of a resurgence for hip hop, and that’s sure to continue into 2015.
Kendrick Lamar has more pressure on him than anyone on this list. good kid, m.A.A.d. city was straight fire, and pretty much everyone (except the Grammy’s — side eye) agreed, so a lot of people are looking for his next album. Now that he’s done his concept album about his growth as a rapper and person, I am eager to see what he does next, and which direction he goes in. I think Kendrick is smart enough to deviate from the last album while sustaining his success.
Pusha T has a bit less pressure on him than Kendrick, but his album could certainly be as good or better. Pusha T has been familiar to hip hop fans for a long time as part of Clipse (with his brother, No Malice), but his debut solo album was only last year. My Name is My Name was excellent, and showed Pusha T was a little more versatile than most people knew him to be, even nailing the early 2000s R&B flow on a track with Kelly Rowland. His next album will come with more confidence as a solo act, and I have little doubt it will be one of the best albums of the year. It will also be interesting to see if he attempts to establish some different branches of his music (as he did in My Name is My Name), or if he goes back to his roots.
In 2010 or so, when Tyler the Creator and Odd Future were blowing up, Domo Genesis was considered by many to be far behind Tyler, Earl Sweatshirt and Hodgy Beats lyrically, and he was considered the goofy stoner rapper of the group. Times have changed since then, as Domo has released three fire mixtapes: Under the Influence (2011), No Idols (2012, with the brilliant Alchemist), and Under the Influence 2 (2014 — actually just about 3 weeks ago) and has established himself as a dope rapper by himself. 2015 will see the release of his debut album, something I’ve been waiting on for some years now.
Also, Frank Ocean is working on his next album.
He just dropped a new song from it called Memrise. Go scope it (and scope my review.) And I know he isn’t exactly a rapper but Frank is god.
