These days, with the internet, there are plenty of places to get music for free. So why buy music?
The internet has been a beautiful thing for hip hop. Nowadays, anyone with internet access can download free tools to make music and then distribute their music to the whole world with the click of a button. For listeners, some great websites exist (shoutout to Datpiff) where you can download all the hottest mixtapes for free with no problems. Then there’s soundcloud, where up and coming (and bigger) artists can throw up their tracks and people can hear them for free!
However, the internet has also made it easier than ever to (illegally) download music for free. Because of the rise in illegal music downloading, almost anyone can download music for free. So why should you pay for music nowadays if you don’t have to? Why buy music when you can just download it?
Well, the most obvious reason is ethical. Artists work hard to craft the music they make, and most of them have been working for years and years to get to the point where they’re even famous enough for people to want to download their music. Downloading music illegally could also stop artists you like from getting the recognition they deserve, and could limit their potential. In many cases, artists are judged by their sales, fair or not.
I know I’ve heard a lot of people complain that the quality of music is declining, and that’s why they don’t actually pay for music anymore. However, one reason that music quality might be declining is because of illegal downloads! Think about it: if your favorite artist is not selling any albums because everyone’s just downloading them, they won’t have money to make more great music. Instead, all the money will go to the latest pop act, which might be catchy, but isn’t nearly as interesting or poetic. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not some elitist who thinks all music has to be super deep or anything, but some of it definitely should be. Music is a democracy, and you vote with your dollar. You can support your favorite artists by buying their music.
Maybe you still aren’t convinced. Maybe you still don’t see why you should pay for music you can download easily. Fair enough, just stick with me here. One of the dopest things you can buy and decorate your room or office with is albums! Physical albums (in some cases) are pretty much art masterpieces that come framed, not to mention the music you get! Why do you think I post album covers on this site all the time? Also, if you have physical albums, you never have to worry about remembering your iTunes password or anything, you can just pop in your favorite tunes and enjoy.
